Discovering the Apocrypha: A Special Great Wednesdays @6 Series When: Wednesday evenings at 6:00 p.m. throughout February
Where: Malone Hall at Saint Paul’s
Instructor: Thack
Join us this February for a deep dive into the fascinating and often overlooked books of the Apocrypha. I will facilitate this four-week class which will explore the history, themes, and spiritual insights of these important texts.
The Apocrypha consists of books found in the Greek Septuagint and Latin Vulgate translations of the Bible, but not included in the Hebrew canon. While not considered canonical by all Christian traditions, these books have been treasured for their wisdom, inspiration, and historical significance. In the Episcopal Church, the Apocrypha is included in our lectionary readings and valued as part of the Church’s rich spiritual heritage. The class will explore the following books: 1 & 2 Esdras Tobit Judith Additions to Esther The Wisdom of Solomon Ecclesiasticus (Sirach) Baruch The Letter of Jeremiah The Prayer of Azariah and the Song of the Three Jews Susanna Bel and the Dragon 1 & 2 Maccabees The Prayer of Manasseh
These texts provide profound insight into Jewish life and thought during the centuries leading up to the New Testament.
Each session will include a light dinner, time for discussion, and a brief lecture. Please contact the Church office to reserve your place for dinner at (251) 626-2421. We look forward to an enriching month of study and fellowship as we journey through the Apocrypha together. Peace, Thack
